Challenge
In 2016, Dell decided to productize the Smart Desk concept as the Dell Canvas 27 display system. This project required collaborations with Microsoft to support the See and Do interaction model. Along with shepherding Windows shell changes, this effort requires a complete spectrum of design concepting from initial product experience, to support applications design to working with marketing to visually communicate the product.
Role
As the Senior Principal UX Design II, I was responsible for working with the Advanced Design team and Microsoft's Windows Shell program managers in conjunction with Dell technologists to support OS features for mulit-touch with pen, totem support and better multi-monitor configuration. Additionally, I was the UX designer for a suite of helper apps to aid in making Windows more touch friendly on the horizontal work surface.
Approach
This project utilized a full spectrum agile, rapid iteration process combining both hardware integration and software development. This effort was also coordinated with releases of Windows Insiders builds that enabled Canvas functionality.
Results
At CES, the Canvas was well received and the product won several design awards like the Spark 2017 Experience and the IXDA Disrupting Award.
